What is a rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty or nosejob as some call it, is the surgery people get when they want to improve the look of their nose.  The nose is without a doubt the focal point of your face, and a well-performed rhinoplasty can really change your look for the better.  A rhinoplasty focuses not only on the cosmetic aspect of the nose, but also on the functional aspect, since the nose must end up looking great but also functioning normally.

Am I a candidate for this procedure?

If you are not happy with the shape or size of your nose, a rhinoplasty can help you get the nose you´ve always wanted.  Patients who have breathing difficulties do to internal nasal problems are also good candidates for this procedure.

What do I need to know about this procedure?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed through a small incision in the columella.  Only if your nose is very wide and we need to close your nostrils, do we need to make any extra scars.  It is usually a 3-hour procedure under general anesthesia. Cartilage is always needed to add structural support to the new nose. In primary rhinoplasties (first time), this cartilage is taken from the septum inside the nose.  In Revision rhinoplasties (not first time), when there is no septum left to be used, the best option is a little rib cartilage or ear cartilage. Revision cases are more complicated and usually take a little longer.  If the patient has breathing problems, we work on fixing the septum, the turbinates, the valves or any structure that can improve this. . Patients usually go home after the procedure with tapes and a splint, which are removed 7 days post-op.

Are there risks involved?

Every patient that goes into an operating room for surgery needs to be aware that risks do exist.  However, complications in this specific procedure are extremely rare.  Dr. Mejia will go over all the possible risks of this procedure with you during the initial consultation.  It is very important that you are honest with Dr. Mejia about your medical history and habits for things to go as smooth as possible.

What is the aftercare like?

Rhinoplasty is a PAINLESS procedure.  Dr. Mejia doesn’t use any nasal packing, which is usually the most uncomfortable aspect of this surgery. Patients go home the same day with tape and a splint over their nose. This splint comes off 7 days post-op in the first follow up visit.  Cold compresses over your eyes for the first three days will help with the swelling.  Sleeping with the head elevated (2-3 pillows) will also help reduce the swelling. Mild nosebleeds are common after surgery, but if the bleeding is excessive, you should get in touch with Dr. Mejia.

How much downtime is there?

Patients can usually go back to their normal activities 7 days after surgery.  By the third month your nose will look great.  However, final results are seen 12 months after surgery when all the swelling disappears.
